Over the years I have certainly added in a vintage Christmas Tin here and there among the shelves throughout my home, but this year I wanted to do something new! This is the first time that I have ever done a grouping of holiday tins this big! Below I am sharing the process of how I created this look.
Once I had the idea to create a vignette using only tins, I decided to highlight the graphics of ONLY a few of them. Over the last year, I have gathered a few really fun vintage Christmas tins with killer graphics and I really wanted to show off their unique weathered charm!
After that, I decided on a color scheme. I went with red and green and white. I have a pretty decent collection of basic vintage tins (like old coffee and cake tins) so I went into the garage and gathered the ones in my “colors.” I put them all on the kitchen table and began ‘working out’ the concept in my mind.
My main concern was making sure that the vignette wouldn’t be too busy for the eye! I felt that these tins – when displayed in mass like this – could easily get overwhelming. Here are a few tips below that I used to help with my concerns!
In an effort to create interest, I usually like to create a variety of heights across my shelves. That can be hard to do when all of the tins you are working with are about the same size! My trick is to use a variety of items as ‘risers’ to create the height (and look) that I want. Here I used a variety of wooden salvaged pieces as well as other tins! I also used the lids of other tins to create the height. I was sure to use pieces that I had on hand that would not distract the eye too.
I used a variety of tins (with all sorts of words and pictures on them) here but I wanted to make sure that the eye was only able to see the graphics on the Christmas Tins that I had facing forward. With that in mind, I had to twist all of the other tins around so that their images and script would NOT be facing forward. Basically, there are a lot of tins here that are facing ‘backwards!” I didn’t want anything (lettering or graphics) to compete with the Holiday graphics that I wanted to showcase. So, if you look closely, you may see some hints of lettering or pictures – especially from the side. But, when you look head on, it looks great!
I had quite a few tins that had graphics/script on their lids that you could easily see. Those graphics/script really didn’t work well in this space and so in an effort to fix that problem, I simply turned the lids upside down! It worked like a charm!
I finished off the look with a few things like this little garland, a few ornaments in my color scheme, two old spice tins and a small lemon cypress tree! These little embellishments not only add a additional layer of interest but they also work to hide some of the spaces in between the tins to help create a more cohesive look! I do not like the blank spaces at all!
Do you have any vintage Christmas tins lying around? If not, it’s time to hit up your local thrift stores, antique malls, and resale shops! If you just can’t find any that you love in your local area – no worries! I have got you covered. I have rounded up a few of the exact ones that I used here and I also included a few others that I would love to add to my collection as well!
