Thickness of stainless steel work bench top ?

just reviving this thread. I am planning on buying the 8 foot craftsman frame. got on sale. was thinking about building one myself, but found a good deal.

But I wanted to build a top that is deeper (30"-32")

plans: 2 layers of plywood and steel sheet on top.

I don't have much experience buying metal sheets or having them rolled...

My question is how big do the sheets come in. I'm in LA and Bob's metal (which Jack Olsen recommended) has only 48" sheets.

I'd really prefer a one piece, with edges folded down and a backsplash.

I've also read that the metal roller can also be the limiting factor, ie may not have a machine long enough to fold a 8' piece of metal

Did some searching but didn't find any specifics

Any advice? Thanks

Other option is to buy the craftsman's 8' top...butcher or SS

Hi folks.

All the benches in my garage are bonkers heavy. I made them with 100mm2 legs and each has a top made of two sheets of 18mm ply, glued and screwed together (36mm thick too).

I thought I’d quickly convert one into a welding table. Nothing fancy, just a bit more appropriate than using a wooden top and means I have more flexibility with the earth (I’ll weld on a stud underneath for the earth).

Bearing in mind the table top is already solid, could I get some advice on how thick to make the steel top? Obviously cost is a major factor.

My gut says that either 3mm or 4mm thick would be plenty - it only really needs to be enough to carry a good earth, be sturdy enough so it doesn’t dent when hit and thick enough to take a countersunk fastener. Any corrections?
