The frequency of maintenance can vary among FPV drone owners, but as a general guideline, it’s advisable to perform maintenance at least once a month. It’s also a good practice to inspect your drone after each race or freestyle session. During maintenance, you may not need to go through every step, but a thorough inspection can significantly impact your drone’s performance.
Essential Cleaning Tools:
Here are the tools you’ll need to effectively clean your FPV drone:
- Soft cleaning brush: Having various sizes is recommended to reach all the nooks and crannies.
- Isopropyl alcohol: This is useful for cleaning the drone’s body and removing dirt, bugs, and grass stains.
- Canned air: Ideal for getting rid of dust and dirt from hard-to-reach areas, including the circuit board and motors.
- Microfiber cloth: Use this to clean surfaces and remove dust.
- Cotton buds: These are helpful for cleaning lenses and tight spaces.
- Paper towels: Essential for gently cleaning the drone’s electronics.
- Lubricant: Necessary for machine lubrication; ensure you choose the right type as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Screwdriver, allen key, and long-nose pliers: You’ll need these tools for disassembling and servicing various parts by removing bolts and nuts.
The Inspection, Cleaning, and Maintenance Process:
Dust Removal and Drone Wiping:
Begin by using canned air to eliminate dust and dirt buildup, especially in the motor’s corners. Afterward, clean the drone’s body with isopropyl alcohol and a soft towel. If possible, consider disassembling the drone to facilitate more thorough cleaning.
Motor Inspection:
- Motor Vibration: With the drone armed (propellers removed), check for excessive vibrations in each fpv motor, as this might indicate a bent motor shaft.
- Free Spinning: Manually rotate each motor to check for rotational friction, comparing it to a spare or new motor. If a motor exhibits non-compliant friction, it may require replacement, cleaning, or bearing lubrication.
- Shaft Straightness: Inspect the straightness of the motor shaft after disassembling, and replace any bent shafts.
- Shaft Play: Test for play by attempting to wiggle the motor bell radially. Minimal play is acceptable; excessive play may require bearing or motor replacement.
- Inner Parts: Ensure that the magnets are securely fastened to the motor bell and undamaged. Use canned air or blue tack to remove any debris from the motor bell.
- Screw Torque: Double-check that the motor screws are tightly fastened, and apply thread locker to secure any loose screws.
- Bearing Maintenance: For bearings with significant friction, corrosion, or dirt, consider cleaning them using an ultrasonic cleaner.
Checking the LiPo Battery:
- Examine the age of your LiPo battery. Differentiating between new and used packs is crucial, as older packs may have reduced performance.
- Check the balance of each cell using your charger or a LiPo battery meter. If cells are out of balance, use your charger to balance the battery. Consistently out-of-balance cells may warrant battery replacement.
- Evaluate the internal resistance of your battery to assess its health and performance. High internal resistance can lead to reduced efficiency, increased heat, and shorter flight times.
Propeller Inspection:
- Clean the interior of the drone propellers that come into contact with the motors to prevent damage. Use isopropyl alcohol, paper towels, and canned air sparingly to avoid moisture buildup.
Cleaning the Camera Lens:
- The camera lens often gets dirty during flights. Mix equal parts of water and isopropyl alcohol. Gently wipe the lens with a cotton bud soaked in the diluted alcohol, and remove any cotton fibers that may stick to the lens.
