Sheets of polystyrene can be used in prefabricated construction to provide both structural strength and insulation to exterior wall cladding while not adding excess weight to the structure. For existing structures, polystyrene can be handled on site with ease. It does not require professional installation or specialised tools. Since polystyrene sheets are so lightweight, they are suitable for insulating in areas where traditional insulation materials would be more difficult to apply because they are too bulky. Polystyrene sheets are ideal for insulating second-story subfloors, garage doors and outdoor storage sheds. This makes it a perfect solution for the homeowner, looking for an inexpensive and effective way to reduce their energy costs.
How Polystyrene Insulation Sheets Are Made
Expanded polystyrene, also called EPS, is a closed cell, cellular foam plastic material that, once expanded, is comprised of 98% air and only 2% polystyrene. The process to manufacture polystyrene foam boards begins with a pre-foaming process using steam to heat and agitate the resin beads. The heat from the steam forces the cells to expand, filling them with air. After the pre-foaming process beads are dried using a fluid bed dryer to prevent them from sticking together. Once the expanded beads reach the desired density the bead particles are transferred to silos for conditioning. The conditioning process which can take up to 6 to 8 hours, allows the beads to stabilise so that the material can be moulded into blocks or moulded shapes.
The final stage of the process is to fuse the beads in a block moulding machine. Once the blocks have been oven kiln dried, sheets can be cut from the block in various lengths and sizes to suit individual customer requirements.
Working With Polystyrene Boards
Polystyrene insulation boards can be easily trimmed and shaped using a sharp knife or wood-working hand or power tools, to ensure a proper snug fit into the wall cavity, or space that needs to be insulated. This makes working with EPS boards an easy, cost-effective DIY project for handy homeowners.
When properly installed, expanded polystyrene insulation foam boards provide an effective solution to reduce heat loss or heat gain and will not break down. EPS foams perth are inert and since it does not provide any food value, does not attract ants, termites, or rodents, so unlike organic insulation materials, there is no risk that the EPS will become a nesting place for pests.
Foam Technologies Supplies Australia’s Polystyrene Sheets
In recent years, as energy efficiency has become increasingly important, the use of polystyrene as an insulation material is rising in popularity. Foam Technologies is one of Australia’s leading producers of polystyrene foam for use in Building and Construction Projects. We supply sheets in standard sizes of 2400mm x1200mm and 3600mmx1200mm, which can be custom cut in a range of thickness from 10mm all the way to 600mm. Projects that require special sizes or shapes can be quickly accommodated. To learn more about our quality polystyrene products, please visit our website.
