In Lebanon, the World Health Organization (WHO) is working to stop the spread of cholera in the conflict.2024 On October 16, 2024, the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health confirmed a case of cholera in the Akkar Governorate in the north of the country. This is the first case since the cholera outbreak was declared over from October 2022 to June 2023.2023 The Ministry of Public Health is working to stop the spread of cholera in the conflict. Authorities are investigating the extent of the spread of the disease, collecting samples from patient contacts and assessing possible contamination of water sources.

Dr. Abubakar, WHO's representative in Lebanon, noted that the risk of the re-emergence of infectious diseases such as cholera is increasing due to poor water and sanitation conditions in Lebanon and the impact of the ongoing conflict. The immediate priority for WHO is now to strengthen surveillance and improve water sanitation in order to interrupt the chain of transmission and prevent further spread of the epidemic.

The re-emergence of cholera in Lebanon comes at a time when the country's health system, burdened by conflict, is under pressure. The conflict has led to massive displacement, further deteriorating water and sanitation services and infrastructure. WHO has warned that the risk of cholera spreading in Lebanon is “very high”, especially after Israel intensified air strikes against Hezbollah and launched a ground offensive to push it back from Lebanon's northern border, putting tens of thousands of displaced people at very high risk of infection.

This news highlights the challenges of controlling infectious diseases in a context of conflict and instability, as well as the importance of improving basic sanitation to protect populations from the threat of disease.
