Emergency lighting—lighting designed to identify and light up passageways, stairwells, and exits to ensure safe and organized evacuation from a structure during an emergency—is required for the vast majority of structures, whether commercial, industrial, public, private, educational, medical or otherwise.
But determining the placement, number, and type of emergency lights required is a complex matter, largely dependent on the nature and layout of your building in conjunction with the requirements of NFPA’s 2018 Life Safety Code 101, Section 7.9.

To answer the question asked by the title of this article, one should instead ask “Where do I need emergency lighting.”
The regulations have more to do with ensuring sufficient lighting along the path of egress in any structure, rather than assuming that a certain number of lights would be adequate.
Thus, the size and layout of your building, the location of corridors, stairways, and doorways leading to exits and the exits themselves, will all determine where emergency lighting is needed.
This, along with the length of the corridors and the size of rooms and open spaces, will determine how many are needed in each area to provide sufficient lighting for safe and orderly evacuation during failure of power and normal lighting.
Here are the basics of 2018 NFPA 101, Section 7.9.2, which dictates that:
An important point for sake of understanding the above – one foot-candle means that one lumen is provided per square foot.
There are numerous other regulations regarding emergency lighting that are important to know, but the above basic points are the primary ones that will determine how many lights you will need to install in your specific structure.
Essentially, along paths of egress and exits, every square foot of floor must be lit by an average of approximately one lumen (i.e. – one foot-candle). Clearly, depending on the type and strength of emergency lights you purchase and install, as well as the size and layout of your space, you will need a fair number of lights.
Obviously, the process of measuring the space and identifying the coverage provided by the emergency lights you purchase, as well as ensuring you appropriately identify all pathways in need of emergency lights, is a complex and tedious process. But you do not have to navigate it alone.

There are several governing bodies responsible for setting codes and enforcing the requirements for emergency lighting in commercial facilities:
Each entity has specific codes that relate to emergency lighting. IBC codes, for instance, specify the Means of Egress Illumination in an emergency, covering the required lumens at the walking surface, which areas must be illuminated (such as corridors, aisles and exit access stairways and ramps), and the duration of emergency lighting.
Aside from the codes from these “big three,” local authorities in some jurisdictions may have additional codes or regulations that must be followed. Customers whose facilities aren’t in compliance face the risk of being fined (or worse), so they will appreciate your expertise in recommending the right commercial emergency lights.
We’re all familiar with the standard emergency light fixture (often call the “bug-eyes” light kit) that many organizations use. Mounted on the wall, it is basically just a battery unit wired into the building that provides 90 minutes of light when the power goes out. It doesn’t throw a lot of light because it doesn’t have to; the minimum one-foot candle is enough. One typical use for such a fixture is a hallway that leads to an emergency exit light over a door.
But hallways aren’t the only space you’ll find in most commercial facilities, so why should that be the only emergency lighting? For example:
Your goal is to make a safe environment for people in the event of an emergency and to make it as easy as possible for them to navigate their way out – in any space.

Almeida, E. et al (2008) point out that if people have to leave a building in the event of fire occurring and they are not familiar with the building structure well enough, they run for the exit they used as an entrance, even if other exits are much easier to reach or even safer.
People can get disoriented in their surroundings and resort to “herding” behavior, a human group dynamic visible in emergency situation. To put it simply, when people feel panic, they may start acting non-logically and their ability to decide on their own volition can be minimized, if not entirely lost.
A well-designed emergency lighting scheme that illuminates paths of egress and guides people to the closest exit is the prescription to alleviate panic, disorientation, or herding. That’s why it’s so important to understand how the facility is used, and by whom, before planning out which emergency lighting solutions to recommend to your customers.
In addition to knowing how the facility is used and by whom, you’ll need to know the lay of the land. You may be working with grid ceilings, drywall, or open ceilings with fixtures mounted to rafters.
You’ll want to have multiple options available to you to fit the LED emergency light to the needs of the customer’s space and the demands of occupant safety.
