Green stations on uninhabited islands

Unlike ordinary base stations, the biggest challenge in building a base station on an unmanned island is how to solve the problem of electricity.Overall, the site faces challenges such as lack of mains power, strong salt spray corrosion, and difficulties in landing on islands and reefs.

Mount Putuo, located in the Zhoushan Islands of Zhejiang Province, China, is one of the four famous Buddhist mountains in China, attracting countless tourists every year. As a high-quality local tourism route, the entire distance from Zhujiajian Island to Putuo Mountain is 2.72 kilometers, and the distance between surrounding base stations is relatively far, which poses a problem of weak coverage. To solve this problem, it is necessary to build communication base stations on unmanned islands near the route.

Unlike ordinary base stations, the biggest challenge in building a base station on an unmanned island is how to solve the problem of electricity. If the plan of introducing mains electricity is adopted, it will face the challenges of long construction cycles and high engineering costs; If pure oil powered engines are used for power supply, a large amount of carbon dioxide emissions will be generated, which will damage the beautiful island ecological environment in the local area. Moreover, unmanned islands have inconvenient transportation, and later maintenance of oil powered engines will be difficult. Overall, the site faces challenges such as lack of mains power, strong salt spray corrosion, and difficulties in landing on islands and reefs.

Based on the calculation of the power demand and photovoltaic power generation capacity of the station, Zhoushan Mobile and Mobile Design Institute, in collaboration with Huawei Station Energy, innovatively designed a station stacking scheme to provide stable energy supply for unmanned island communication base stations. This green site adopts an outdoor corrosion-resistant integrated design, and the MIMO power supply supports multiple energy sources such as solar energy, mains power, and oil engines, as well as intelligent scheduling. It can achieve seamless switching in 0s and complementary light and oil. The green electricity generated during the day is stored in the intelligent lithium battery, and the energy storage system is used to discharge power to the base station at night and in adverse weather conditions. Even in extreme weather conditions such as continuous cloudy and rainy weather, it can maintain uninterrupted power supply for 20 days.
